The "MGA MK46SAW Mod1" is a Patent-pending, BATFE-approved, semi-automatic, belt-fed, closed bolt, hammer operated firearm based on the Mk46/M249 Squad Automatic Weapon used by our military today. This gun isavailable to civilians as a Title I firearm.

Since our focus is on the repair and servicing of LE and Military Weaponry, we intend to build only very few of the civilian versions of this gun, making this a very rare gun. The first 12 buyers were allowed to choose their serial number but this is no longer offered, sorry.

Though similar to the Military MK46, and compatible with many of the MK46 Accessories and tools (such as butt stocks, heat shields, barrels, top cover feed mechanism, and bipod), the MGA MK46SAW Mod1 is built using a Patent-pending design which fires from the closed bolt position, utilizes a floating firing pin and hammer via a standard H∓K semi-auto trigger pack.

Internal parts are generally not compatible with the FN Military gun: neither the machine gun operating group from an FN MK46 machingun, nor the FN fire-control group can be installed or readily made to enter this semi-auto gun.

History of the FN Herstal Mk46 & the MGA MK46SAW Mod 1

The Minimi light machine gun was developed by FN Herstal in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Mass production began in 1982 in Belgium, and at about the same time a cosmetically-modified version was adopted by the US Armed Forces as the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW). Since its introduction, the Minimi has seen widespread service with numerous variations and models. An early variant, the Para (Paratroop) version, shortened the barrel and added a tubular telescoping buttstock. The Para variant trades some range for compactness and maneuverability. In response to field reports of the Para Minimi, the SPW variant was introduced with the telescoping buttstock, intermediate-length barrel without a quick-change handle, and Picatinny rails for optics and accessories. Both variants removed the Minimi's magazine well to save weight, meaning they are exclusively belt fed. The SPW variant, with minor modifications, was adopted by the US Special Operations Command (US SOCOM) as the Mk46 mod 0.

All variants of the Minimi, up to and including the Mk46, are noted for reliability and firepower (assuming proper care!). Failures of Minimi-derived LMGs in combat, particularly the M249s in service in Iraq, are attributed to the age and wear of the M249s currently pressed into service. New M249 and Mk46 LMGs are known to fire tens of thousands of rounds without failure.

In 2006, Machine Gun Armory, a company who rebuilds and repairs Military M-249s and M-240s, set out to produce a semi-automatic version of the (then) new Mk46 for the civilian market. Our staff started by replicating a Mk46 from the ground up, reverse engineering the firearm from scratch. Once we were able to produce Mk46s from raw steel (done only for design purposes), we modified the design to allow the use of a semi-auto Heckler & Koch trigger group and a new bolt and operating group that required closed bolt, hammer operation.

MGA then made the exterior appear as close to the original Mk46 as possible which is why this gun accepts essentially all M249/MK46 accessories! We received ATF approval for sale to civilians in early 2009.

Shortly after that , after receiving requests and inquiries from SWAT and Sheriffs Department personal, we designed a Burst-Pack and SEF full-auto version for Law Enforcement Agencies.
